“Mission was in their bones…the church’s life clearly is mission. The church is mission. That is the identity we have from our heritage…”" Dr. Eugene Wehrli describing the German Evangelical people.
St. Johns’ first Pastor was Louis Nollau, a Missionary from Germany. He was a dynamic force in the founding of many of the mission institutions of the German Evangelical Church, including The Evangelical Children’s Home (now Every Child’s Hope). That spirit of service to the Lord continues at St. Johns and in the United Church of Christ. A few current members of the congregation are genealogical descendants of the St. Johns founding families, but we are ALL spiritual heirs of Pastor Nollau and the early members of this congregation.
Serving God by serving others is our mission! Strong on-going support of a wide range of missions–many of them walking beside those in need in partnership. In the early days it was gathering farm produce at the Harvest Home Festival to give to the Evangelical Children’s Home, and supporting other German Evangelical Missions and Schools. Today the range of work has expanded and evolved to work to meet today’s needs.
